First announced at CES 2012, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet is ready to be released at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and Verizon Wireless online on March 1st.  This compact tablet device is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor and it has a 7.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display at 1280x800 resolution for enjoying movies, pictures and games.  Priced at $499.99 with a new two-year customer agreement, the tablet offers customers quick access the Web with its HTML 5 Web browser, streaming music, Samsung Media Hub entertainment and more via Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, with mobile broadband data plans starting at $30 monthly access for 2 GB of data.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 can also be used to control your home entertainment system, with the "Peel Smart Remote" feature controlling televisions, audio players and other home entertainment systems. You can also connect this tablet with your HDTV via a HDMI Multimedia Dock and built-in HDMI port.

Apple allegedly offered Motorola and Samsung patent licensing

Sources, close to Apple, have reportedly shared with Dow Jones Newswires that Apple has offered Motorola and Samsung patent licensing deals in order to settle some of the ongoing litigations.

Allegedly, Apple is seeking between $5 and $15 royalties per handset or roughly between 1% and 2.5% of net sales per device.

If this information turns out true it marks a shift in Apple's strategy when dealing with Google's rife operating system. It's no secret that the late Apple leader, Steve Jobs wanted nothing to do with reconciling with Android but rather wished it gone from the face of the market.

If Apple settles into patent licensing deals with Motorola and Samsung, it could receive a nice cash injection as we all know Android is flourishing in sales but also the Cupertino-based company could raise the price of making Android smartphones, thus effectively hardening the task of producing low-end droids for the mass market and making the OS less favorable for developers.

Trying to stop or otherwise slow down Android by seeking injunctions in various countries is becoming more and more tiresome a task. Samsung and others have proven that even hardware-based injunctions can be overcome in a timely manner so it's logical if Apple has decided to change their strategy. It's either that or we're witnessing a textbook the-stick-or-the-carrot type of game in action.

Microsoft is a known patent licensee to Android manufacturers and has been stigmatized for it as a bully that stifles innovation. There's no denying that if these alleged patent licensing deals go through Apple's popularity among Android fans will hit a new low.

Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance review: While-u-wait

Here's one to keep you busy while you wait for the Galaxy S III. One that may help the original Galaxy S finally take the hint and hang up its boots. The Galaxy S Advance is the next in a string of sequels looking to get the best afterburn out of Samsung's top-selling Android flagships.

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance could be spotted at this year's MWC along with other space-fillers like the Wave 3 and the Omnia W. Nothing wrong with either of those but the actual stars of the show were a couple of tablets and a new projector phone. Samsung had a rather underwhelming showing and used the venue to promote the hell out of their Galaxy Note.

Phoneblets and tablets must be higher on Samsung's agenda these days. Or they may've been asked to kindly abstain from major launches to give the Galaxy Nexus a good free run. Whatever the reason, the Galaxy S Advance comes at a dry time for the company in terms of major phone headlines.

OK, life is a series of peaks and troughs and the S Advance finds itself at the low end of the oscillation. But it's by no means in need of being comforted and reassured. This is a rather solid package we're looking at, considering it'll be competing in the midrange. The combination of dual-core and Super AMOLED puts it in the elite company of the Note, the Nexus and the Galaxy S II.

Of course there's fine print in just about every deal. The AMOLED screen of the Galaxy S Advance is the PenTile variety and the WVGA resolution isn't the best there is. The NovaThor U8500 chipset is still to prove its worth and there's no commitment to ICS upgradability as yet.

Samsung are known for trying to rule any price segment by sheer numbers and the Galaxy S Advance gives them extra penetration in the upper midrange. What we're not sure about is whether they need all that depth. Having already seen the Galaxy R at work, it seems the S Advance doesn't offer that much more.

They're perhaps meant for different markets. The S Advance for example is expected to debut in Russia before seeing wider availability. Anyway, the S Advance and the Galaxy R look very similar on paper save for the screens and the chipsets. But we won't rush to judgments before we've run our usual benchmarks. No need to tell you they're coming up, but first we'll see about the design and build.

MWC: Samsung Galaxy S2 Named Best Phone, Boosts Android

Samsung's Galaxy S2 was named the best smartphone of the year at the Mobile World Conference, giving the manufacturer and the Android OS a big boost.

The award, given by the GSMA, is great publicity for both Samsung and Google as the two companies continue to grow their user bases in the mobile market. The iPhone 4 took home the award at last year's MWC, and the S2 beat out its successor, iPhone 4S, to nab the top prize this year.

An Android-powered device winning the best phone of the year award is a tremendous accomplishment for the operating system. Analysts have criticized the platform for having a high learning curve, being too susceptible to viruses and malware and lacking the polish of Apple's iOS.

The S2's win is likely to help change many consumers' perception of the platform, elevating it in their eyes from a second-tier software to an OS worth considering.

Google's platform played a part in the S2's success, but Samsung deserves even more credit. The South Korean manufacturer managed to put out a device that upstaged the iPhone 4 in power, featured a thinner design and came very close to equalizing Apple's famous retina display.

Samsung also managed to develop an Android skin that reviewers said enhanced the Android OS, while several other manufacturers included skins that made their devices run sluggishly on the platform.

Winning the smartphone of the year award could extend the shelf of life the S2 a bit longer, but Samsung is also expected to announce the Galaxy S3 soon. Consumer anticipation for the device is already at a high level, but all eyes will be on Samsung as it attempts to launch a handset that can live up to the award-winning S2.

Samsung now heads into the launch of the S3 with an incredible amount of momentum. The company emerged as Apple's primary competition in the smartphone market, and if the S3 gets out to a strong head start in sales, a new iPhone could have a lot to catch up to when it launches later this year.

Samsung may be the best smartphone maker in the world, and the award from MWC shows that people are starting to take notice.

Samsung Galaxy S II ICS update to hit UK next week

Some lucky fellas have been enjoying the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update on their Galaxy S II units since this morning, but those based in the UK will have to wait another week.

Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea are the markets in the first wave of the update roll-out, with UK (among others) to follow shortly. The exact quote that Pocket-lint.com managed to get from Samsung is that the update will start seeding in Britain in the week commencing March 19, which is exactly 6 days from now.

And with the Galaxy S II update already rolling out, the Samsung R&D center is already shifting its attention towards the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 duo. Those should be the next devices in the company's lineup to get official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates.

Finally, Samsung confirmed that it will be delivering Android 2.3 Gingerbread Value Pack updates for the original Galaxy S, the Galaxy Tab 7", the Galaxy S Plus, the Galaxy W and the Galaxy from the end of March. The update will be bringing Face Unlock and other ICS features to the smart devices that won't be getting to taste Android ICS officially.

Samsung Galaxy S3 in April or not?

A couple of days ago we wrote about a rumour about the potential release date of the next Galaxy smartphone was determined to be sometime in April.  Samsung has officially gone to Twitter saying that the date has not been set and that the rumour is pure speculation.

The original allegations came after the cat was let out of the bag by Cheil Worldwide, an ad and marketing agency.  Although Korean website, MT, goes on to confirm that there is no firm release date, they do go on to say that an Android based LTE smartphone is set to be released in April, but that it isn’t the Galaxy S3.  Who do we believe?  The rumour or the official response?  Only one way to find out, and that’s to wait until April.

Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II will get ICS on March 10

Just as we were getting ready to get it on March 15, we got even better news. Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II will be receiving an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on March 10 - less than 48 hours from now.

The globally available I9100 will be the only version, which will receive the update at the moment. The TouchWiz-ed firmware will be available both on Kies and OTA.

As you can see in the screenshot above, Face Unlock, Android Beam, and mobile data usage are among the major improvements which will come with the update. In a rather interesting fashion, flash support and Bluetooth 3.0 HS will not be supported due to an "ICS OS feature."

Samsung also warn against updating your device while running a customized or unofficial firmware on it. Apparently, unexpected problems might arise during installation.

MWC 2012: HTC, Nokia and Samsung steal the show

As the excitement of the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2012 (2012) dies down, and everyone starts settling back in their own mundane existence, let’s take a look back at the devices that stole the scene and marked the highlights and sidelights of MWC 2012.

HTC unveiled the HTC One series that included HTC One X, HTC One V and HTC One X but it was the latter that wowed the crowd the most.  HTC One X with it’s stellar camera, superb 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 non-PenTile display, quad-core Tegra 3 processor and the unibody polycarbonate housing.  Running on HTC Sense 4.0 with ICS, One X removes all sluggishness normally associated with Sense.  Props to HTC for fine-tuning their overlay and of course big thanks to the Tegra 3 CPU, HTC One X delivers lightning fast yet silky-smooth UI feel.

While opting not to launch the highly-anticipated Galaxy S III, Samsung instead decided to push the Galaxy Note 10.1.  Although not much different from the previous version, the increased screen real estate, perfect scrolling and build quality easily made this super Note one of MWC’s show-stopper by commanding huge amount of attention.

One of the most talked-about phone in the expo, Nokia PureView 808 certainly captured a lot of attention by way of its 41-megapixel monster camera and Rich Recording audio feature.  Sample images taken by its camera yielded rich, almost surreal feel and videos taken at extremely low light turned out cleanly with little to no noise.  The technology sorrounding Nokia PureView 808 is truly awe-inspiring.

Android 4.0 update for Samsung Galaxy S2 on Mar.15

At least in Israel anyway.  Samsung Mobile Israel made a statement that they expect to roll out the update for unlocked and carrier-branded handsets in Israel starting March 15.

The announcement came from their official Facebook page and said:

We promised we were working on it. You waited patiently. And on 15 March it’ll arrive: Android version 4, ICS, to tens of thousands of GALAXY S II devices purchased from cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We are very excited for the launch, hope you are too

Whether other markets will see the same thing is still unclear.  Hopefully the updates will roll out internationally around the same time.

MWC 2012: Samsung overview

There was no Galaxy S III from Samsung, contrary to expectations, but they did show a new phone - the Samsung Galaxy Beam, with (you guessed it) a built-in projector. It shared the spotlight with two 10.1-inch tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Tab 2 10.1.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 brings Samsung's S Pen stylus where it belongs - a big screen. We've no talent for painting whatsoever, but couldn't wait to try and sketch something on the Android version of Photoshop Touch.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 should be a more affordable tablet (though pricing isn't revealed yet), with specs comparable to those of the original Tab 10.1. The Tab 2, however, tops the old version with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and records FullHD video.

Samsung's earlier attempts to combine a phone and a portable microprojector fizzled out, but they're at it again. The Samsung Galaxy Beam is a fairly standard dual-core droid, with the notable exception of the nHD projector. It can project an image with a 50" diagonal.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is now official

We saw it on a billboard yesterday, so it is hardly a surprise. Now it is official. Samsung just took the cover off its latest Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, which features an S Pen. Unlike its 5.3" relative however, the newcomer leaves no question marks over its identity - it is now strictly a tablet.

The spec sheet of the tablet is still rather scarce. We know that it features a dual-core CPU, clocked at 1.4GHz, HSPA+ connectivity, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 also packs some quite interesting software tricks. One of them is multi-screen functionality. It enables you to watch videos or browse the web, while sketching out notes with the S Pen. The 10.1" screen is certainly helpful here. The said feaure also makes the tablet a seriously useful educational tool.

S Pen functionality has gone even further in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. The slate features S Note - an app which enables you to combine notes and sketches together with web content and other digital media. The app also integrates search engines seamlessly, thus allowing you to drag and drop content without switching screens.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 will also come preloaded with Adobe's Photoshop Touch and Ideas apps. Both applications integrate the S Pen completely, therefore allowing you to let your creativity go wild.

February 23, 2012T-Mobile to release Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G smartphone in March

The new Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G smartphone will be released exclusively by T-Mobile in March. Announced last January, the Galaxy S Blaze 4G is the latest Galaxy S smartphone, and it features a carbon black color design with a 3.97-inch Super AMOLED touch screen. The device is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. There's also a 5-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, flash and advanced shooting modes, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, and a 720p HD video recorder.

The Galaxy S Blaze 4G's mobile entertainment offerings include streaming movies on Netflix, live or on-demand TV programs on T-Mobile TV in mobile HD, as well as TV show and movie downloads from the Samsung Media Hub. Also included on the smartphone is TeleNav GPS Navigator with hands-free, voice-guided turn-by-turn driving directions, real-time traffic alerts, full-color 3-D moving maps and local alerts, and a pre-loaded T-Mobile 4GPro App Pack with business applications like DropBox, Evernote, Square, TripIt, Camscanner and LinkedIn.

Running on T-Mobile's 4G (HSPA+42) network, the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G will hit T-Mobile retail stores and T-Mobile online priced at $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate card, with a two-year service agreement and qualifying Classic voice and data plan.

February 27, 2012Samsung Galaxy Beam Projector Phone Announced

Samsung has made their new Galaxy Beam projector phone official. The device is equipped with a 15 lumens projector that can display images up to 50-inches wide, and it's the thinnest projector phone around at the 12.5mm thick. 

Samsung Galaxy Beam will ship with Android 2.3 OS sometime in Q2, and it is also equipped with a 4-inch WVGA TFT LCD, 1GHz dual-core processor, 5MP main camera and 1.3MP front camera and 720p HD video recording. There's also Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, and a microSD memory card slot.

New details emerge on the Samsung Galaxy SIII

While the all world of Android fans wait for the official release of the Samsung Galaxy SIII, new details emerge based on rumors and leaks from, what so called, trusted sources. Today, BRG announced some interesting specs of this super-phone.

According to BRG’s sources, the new SGS3 will feature a hoping 4.8? display that most likely will have a 720p HD resolution, even if they don’t have confirmation on this. The most interesting part is the choice of the materials for the back of the phone. SGS2 has been considered by the majority of the community as the best phone in terms of hardware but that didn’t saved him from several critics because of the use of plastic. BRG’s site is advancing that the new SGS3 will have a ceramic back which is an interesting choice by Samsung.

Other features expected are the Quad-Core processor, Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, good quality cameras and 4G LTE, as already been advanced before by most of the sites.

We will have to wait a bit more to see the official announcement of this phone and, if you were waiting to get some news from the Mobile World Congress 2012, we’re sorry to let you know that Samsung already advanced that SGS3 will not be presented at Barcelona and will be released on a dedicated event to be host later.

Samsung announces Galaxy Beam with built-in projector

The MWC 2012 is just about to start and Samsung already has already announced a new phone. The first of what we believe is a long list of phones to come is the Galaxy Beam, whose pi?ce de r?sistance is a built-in projector. The projector uses a 15 lumens lamp that is capable of projecting a 50-inch wide high-definition image, although Samsung does not mention the actual resolution.

Other than that, the Galaxy Beam has a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 720p video recording, 8GB internal memory with microSD card slot, 2,000mAh battery and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 leaked prior to announcement

Just outside of the main MWC venue area, we glimpsed a billboard of an upcoming Note tablet from Samsung. Not to be confused with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Galaxy Note will possibly be targeted towards a different audiences. From the ad, we can tell it also features the S Pen stylus, which the Tab 2 does not.

Historically, it's not uncommon for the Samsung unannounced devices to be leaked across the MWC grounds.

As you'll recall, the original Galaxy Note is a 5.3 inch device, which could be either regarded as a large smartphone or as a small tablet. At 10.1", the argument over whether its a phone or a tablet becomes effectively void this time around. What Samsung's new slogan will be for the new Note 10.1 tablet, we'll find out tomorrow.
