Apple pressures supplier, Foxconn to increase workers salary wage

Foxconn, Apple’s supplier of iPad and iPhone parts recently reported that it will increase its workers salaries in China. The wage hike, said to be from 16-25% will take effect immediately and will raise workers salary to $400.00/month. Foxconn also said that they will look at curbing overtime in the said factory.

The announcement happened in the wake of Apple’s own request to have Foxconn’s facilities investigated following a series of unsavory exposés aired by the Times about the company and its supply chain, Foxconn included.  Apple has sought the Fair Labor Association’s help in auditing Foxconn’s Shenzhen and Chengdu, China facilities.

The FLA’s report is not due until next month but the group has already found “tons of issues” plaguing the said facilities as reported by FLA’s chief executive this week.

Apple had been getting the flak from various human rights advocates group following reports of unsafe working conditions, child labour and excessive overtime in Foxconn’s facilities in China.

Foxconn Technology manufactures products for high-profile companies such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and several other electronic companies.
